GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

My Lord,

Ternor's Despatch No. 279 of the 11th August, 1915. cretary of State's Des- -patch No.247 of the 21st. September 1915.

vernor's Despatch No.157 of the 10th May, 1917. cretary of State's Des- -patch No. 142 of the 19th July 1917.

..

With reference to the correspondence sors.

noted in the margin, I have the honour to

inform Your Lordship that an application 52952 has been received from the Director of

-de. St. Joseph's College for a building grant,

and in view of the fact that the school

has received assistance from the Government quite recently I think

it desirable to review shortly the history of the Institution and to set out the special circumstances that have led to this further

request for assistance.

2.

The College was started in 1881 and in 1883 a grant of £6,000 was made subject to a "conscience clause" being inserted in the Trust Deed reserving to the Trustees the power to withdraw the College from the operation of the Grant-in- -aid Scheme should any further alteration be made in that scheme to

which the Roman Catholic Church might conscientiously object. In

such a case, the Grant-in-aid should be repaid to the Government

before the College was withdrawn from the operation of the scheme. Further grants of 8540 in 1900, of £5,250 in 1903, and of £6,000 in 1917 were made, and the bllege still remains under the Grant

Code.

3.

Last year the College Architects declared

the main building to be in a dangerous condition owing to the BE RIGHT HONOURABLE

VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,
